It’s time for the holidays!
Far more than gift giving, I enjoy the slowing down of the farm. I love the long, cozy evenings of being curled up with a book or working on a knitting project, and just celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
That said, however, gift giving is a part of our lives and family at Christmas. We try to buy things for each other that are useful and good quality. The best kind of gifts are those that bring joy and purpose.
Gone are the days of cheap plastic crap, just to be able to say that a gift was given. Sustainable living doesn’t disappear when the holidays come around, actually, the holidays can be a way to not only share, but encourage a more responsible lifestyle.
(Avoid all of that toxic wrapping paper too, by making your own reusable, cloth gift bags here!)
Retail doesn’t have to be at the top of your gift shopping options. As a matter of fact, one of the most amazing gifts you can give is your time. Giving coupons that can be redeemed for cleaning, mowing grass next summer, house-sitting or babysitting would be very much appreciated, especially for those who seem to have “everything”.
Experiential gifts are another awesome option! What about tickets to a ball game or a movie? How about a years pass to the local ice-skating rink? Local playhouses, museums and planetariums all offer programs for children and families to enjoy time together!
Handmade gifts, whether it be something you made or someone else, are also special and appreciated. Don’t discount the value of the jam you made last summer, or some dishcloths that you made. How about some pumpkin bread?? People love homemade gifts!
