Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110 degrees F or 45 degrees C
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. fresh active yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (I use olive or canola)
  • 5+ cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. Directions:

In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam.

  2. Mix salt and oil into the yeast. Mix in flour, one cup at a time. Knead dough on lightly floured surface (or in a very large bowl) until smooth. Place in a well oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Punch dough down. Knead for a few minutes, and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place in 2-9×5 bread pans that have been greased and floured. Allow to rise for 30 minutes or until dough has risen at least one inch above pan.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes. You can bake the bread at 325 degrees F for about 35 minutes for a softer texture.

  5. I can make 2 loaves of this bread for about 50 cents, isn’t that ridiculous!?
